Experience a better cloud: Synology’s new operating system DSM 5.1

Networking No Comments

Synology – SCALEWIRELESS’s partner in video surveillance and data solutions – unveiled the new DiskStation Manager 5.1, an operating system for its NAS servers and home clouds. It is a free download, just like the recent testversion 5.1 Beta.

It boasts many new features revolving around three critical concepts: integrating private cloud, broadening sharing possibilities, and enhancing data safety.
Versatile backup and security tools: More complete and up to 169% faster backup through network. New Security Advisor scans the system for vulnerabilities, such as weak passwords, malware, misconfigured services, and pending updates. Packages can be digitally signed to avoid using tampered executables. Stricter file access permissions for programs. Assign specific services to dedicated network interfaces for extra security.
Increase productivity: Proxy Server speeds up Internet browsing while securing network. File Station can now connect to a remote FTP or WebDAV server, while its new email client provides a quicker alternative for file sharing. IPv6 support expanded to QuickConnect and more DSM services. New virtualization options such as File Clone and Reserve Space. SSD caching is more intuitive.
Create a better and more integrated private cloud: File versioning in Cloud Station can be disabled for greater storage flexibility. Support for synchronizing data in encrypted folders, as well as Windows ACL for more precise user privileges’ setting. Cloud Sync is compatible with more public cloud providers, such as OneDrive, Box or hubiC. Cloud Sync and all of Cloud Station’s client software support selective sync, allowing users to determine which folders, file types and size to sync. Cloud backup offers a contingency plan for archives with support for Microsoft Azure, SFR, and hicloud. Glacier Backup supports file-level dedupe and restoration from Amazon Glacier.
Sharing video, audio, and photo content has never been easier: Revamped and smarter Video Station will automatically look for subtitles on Internet. The slideshow feature on Photo Station produces professional-looking presentations. Share file collections with a public link. Most of the mobile apps have been tweaked.
Flexible and secured collaboration tools: DS note provides Android and iOS users with mobile access to Note Station. In addition to a rich-text editor, media content can be previewed instantly. For group collaboration, Note Station and DS note support track changes, version history, and restoration. Sensitive notes can be encrypted with passwords.
