How to choose Western Digital HDD for server?

Computers and servers use HDDs differently. This means hard disks are different, too. Some of them are working 24/7 rsand others are switched off during night or after work hours. Western Digital always-on hard disks are marked with Purple and Red labels and they are very suitable for server and NAS use.

But what to choose? There are different Red and Purple series hard disks, too. Basically, Red HDDs are meant for use in 1-8 bay NAS, Purple is suitable for video surveillance systems for recording. But let´s explain more exactly.

  • WD Red is for persaonal and small office use in 1-8 bay NAS servers with RAID.
  • WD Red Pro is best for all companies from small offices to enterprises, when NAS must be powerful and reliable. Server can be with up to 16 bays for HDDs.
  • WD Purple is ideal for 24/7 video surveillance recorderswith up to 8 bays and 32 cameras.
  • WD Purple NV is suitable for network video recorder (NVR) with up to 64 cameras.
  • WD Re can work with maximum load and high availability systems – for example datacenters and surveillance stations wirh more than 64 cameras.

Western Digital server HDDs are available with volume up to 6 TB, but WD Red, WD Red Pro ja WD Purple will be upgraded until 8 TB during march 2016. Bigger HDDs will be available for purchase in first half of year 2016.
