Stackelbergs

Stackelberg family, well known in Estonia, Livonia, Saaremaa and Kurland, was mentioned in documents of Riga already in 1306. Peter Stackelberg (ca. 1480 – 1545) took part in the campaigns of Grand Master of Order Wolter von Plettenberg against Russians, was a judge of Tartu Bishopric and first in line of many outstanding local noblemen. He was the forefather of four family branches: Kaagri, Kambja, Pidula and Haljava.

By the end of XIX century Stackelberg Family owned about 50 manors. Members of Haljava branch possessed manors of Moora, Kuksema, Öötla, Kiviloo, Eivere, Roosna-Alliku and Hõreda. Well-known representatives of this branch were the writer Traugott von Stackelberg (1891–1970); Swedish field-marshals Berndt Otto Stackelberg elder (1662–1734) and Berndt Otto Stackelberg younger (1703–1787); German economist and creator of game “Stackelberg leadership model” Heinrich von Stackelberg (1905–1946), the Head of Estonian Knighthood Otto Gustav von Stackelberg (1771-1811) from Roosna-Alliku manor.

During the revolutions of 1917 he and his brothers had to hide in the forests for almost a year. After the proclamation of Republic of Estonia Patrick and his younger brother Ernst took part in Estonian War of Independence on the side of young Republic and in 1919 Ernst felt. Patrick’s family was granted two farms from the grounds of their former manor Hõreda for the outstanding services in War of Independence. They lived there until 1939, farming and slowly purchasing back major part of the land property once owned, except for the manor itself, which Republic of Estonia granted to First Lieutenant V. Liivak.

Georg-Wolter was born in Hannover, Germany, as an eldest son of Patrick and Ilsemarie von Stackelberg. His first visit to Estonia was somewhere in the 1990-ties with a group of German juveniles. He was astonished how strong are his roots in Estonian ground. Soon his visits became so regular that he bought himself a house on Vormsi Island. Georg-Wolter is actively involved in interpreting and preserving cultural inheritance of Baltic Germans. Stackelbergs have restored quite a few of their numerous burial places. Georg-Wolter brought from Germany and gave to school situated in Roosna-Alliku manor the portraits of last owners. He is a member of various non-governmental organizations supporting inheritance of Baltic Germans and other national minorities.
